Album Cover Coasters - Design Tech Project

What is your project? For my project, I made 4 coasters with album covers on them and a holder for them. The coasters are 4"x4"x1/8", and the holder is 5"x4 & 4/9". What were the steps you took to complete your project? I designed the coasters and the holder using Adobe Illustrator. I used the laser cutter to cut out and engrave the coasters. I sanded some burn marks off of them. I used Easel to print the holder with the CNC router.  I made some mistakes with the holder's print, so I reprinted it at the correct proportions. Originally, I had intended to use the CNC router to cut a piece that says "now playing" that I could glue onto the holder, but after some issues printing, it was too late to try again, so I scrapped it. I applied finishing oil to my holder and coasters. What do you like most about your project? I like how well my coasters came out. They look identical to the original albums they were based on. What was challenging about thi...

Coaster Project - Emiliano Martorello

Image
My project was to make four coasters and one coaster holder, and I would put a design on the coasters. The first thing I did was to design the coasters on Adobe Illustrator and get all the measurements exactly to scale. After I did that I would send it to the laser cutter and cut it out, sand down the surfaces and edges, and finally put a varnishing oil on it. I enjoyed design the coasters in Adobe Illustrator the most, and the thing I like the most about the project is watching the laser cutter cut out the coasters. The most challenging part of this project was probably designing the coasters and now that I know how to use Adobe Illustrator it would be way easier to design it and take less time than I did the first time. Im probably going to keep it near the dinning room table for whenever we need them for drinks.

My project is a wooden cutting board made from three different types of wood: maple, walnut, and cherry. To complete the project, the design was planned, the wood pieces were cut and assembled by my partner while I was absent, and then I sanded the board until it was smooth and applied varnish to finish it. My favorite part of the project is the look of the different woods together because the contrast between the maple, walnut, and cherry makes the board visually interesting. The most challenging part was making sure the sanding was even and smooth so the final finish looked clean. If I were to do this project again, I would be more involved during the cutting stage so I could experience every step of the process. Now that the project is finished, I plan to keep and use the cutting board at home.

Shark Coasters

Image
My project is a set of shark-themed wooden coasters with a holder shaped like a shark fin, and the coasters are round with a shark design and a background inspired by the shark’s habitat. To make it, I planned the design, cut out the wood pieces, shaped and sanded them, added the shark designs, and then finished and assembled everything. My favorite part of the project is the overall design, especially the shark fin holder, because it’s creative and fits the theme really well. The most challenging part of the project was designing everything and figuring out how to make the coaster holder and coasters look good and work together. If I did the project again, I would refine the design more before cutting the wood so the final product is even cleaner. Now that it’s finished, I plan to keep and use the coasters at home or possibly give them as a gift.

Design tech cutting board --- Isabelle Bostic

My project was to create a cutting board using different slats of wood. We first cut the wood to size after designing our cutting boards and making measurements. Then we glued them together, let them dry, and routed the edges. Then we sanded it twice (120 --> 220), brushed off the sawdust, and varnished it before letting it dry a final time at an angle.  I really like how it turned out, and I think that the whole process is really cool! However, I would have liked to maybe add a tiny sliver of maple or two to balance it out more and add some dimension to the piece. I think that the hardest part was the routing; I wasn't able to do it, but it looked very difficult. I think I'll give this to my dad for Chanukkah. I'm super stoked to see his reaction!

Cutting Board Project - Avery

Image
My project was a cutting board with different color strips that we made in class. We started by thinking about and sketching out the ideas. Then we got the wood we would need and cut out the pieces we would need. I cut my in to 2 inche pieces. Then we glued those pieces together. Then, since we are working with pears, we cut them in half and cut off the ends to make them even. Once we finished that, we rounded off the edges, started sanding, and put finishing oil on. Then we came back the next few days and put more oil on.  What I liked most about the project was learn how wood works. We learned some of these with the coasters, but we got to learn how to cut the wood ourselves. The most challenging part of this project was that I missed the first day of this project, and that meant I had to rush my design. If I could change one thing about this project is that I wish I had done a more Interesting board. My plan for this cutting board is to give it to my mom so she can use it...

Wooden Cutting Board Design Tech - John Bishop

What is your project? What is your project? My project is a wood cutting board made with walnut, cherry, and maple wood. What were the steps you took to complete your project? Pick the wood type and cut list Rough Sketch it Glue wood pieces together Cut edges off and plane Cut board in half and round corners Finish the cutting board with varnishing oil and let it dry Burnish the cutting board and add a second layer of varnishing oil and let dry What do you like most about your project? What i really liked most about my project is the rounded corners, because it makes it feel like a real cutting board you would buy in a store. What was most challenging about this project? The most challenging part about this project was having to plane, halve, and round the corners of the board all in one class. What would you change about this project if you did it again? The thing I would change about this project is switching the gradient to walnut wood in the center. What is your plan for it no...

flower coasters

Image
My project for design tech was flower coasters with a flower coaster holder, too. I first thought about ideas for coasters, and I really liked the flower ideas, so first we sketched out the design and figured out what the size was gonna be and the materials I needed. We then designed our ideas on illustrator and then put it through the laser cutter. We then designed our coaster holders and put them through the CNC router, and after that, we sanded all of the coasters and coaster holders. We then put the finishing oil on them and finished them. I really liked my flower coaster design because I really like flowers, and there's like a little outline on the border of the flower, and it goes really well with the coaster holder. The most challenging thing about making these coasters was figuring out the right sizes for the coasters and the holder so that they fit right. If I were to do it again and change something, I would maybe make each flower a different type of flower. Now that I ...

Coaster Project -Avery Pompa

My project was a record player coaster holder and record coasters. We started by thinking about and sketching out the ideas. Then we put our designs for our coasters on Adobe Illustrator, which we learn how to use earlier this year. Then we cut our wood with the laser cutter, and then we sanded coasters. Once we were done with that, we started to put our designs for our coaster holders on Adobe Illustrator. Then we used the CNC router to cut out some pieces to make our holder. Once we were finished cutting, we started to glue the pieces together. Then we had to sandded the hold as well. To finish the project, we put finishing oil and furnished the coasters and the holder. What I like most about this project was that I learned how to work with materials I don't usually get too used like wood. It was really cool to learn how to use a laser cutter and a CNC router. The most challenging part of this project was learning how to use Adobe Illustrator. I found it hard to use and learn. ...

Aviation Coasters - Sam Friedberg

For my coaster project, I have created some aviation coasters inspired by different gauges and spin dials you can find on the dashboard in the cockpit of a Cessna 172. The Cessna 172 is a small four-seater aircraft with minimal digital technology and a single propeller engine located at the front of the aircraft. The reason I chose the Cessna 172 for my inspiration is that not only do I love airplanes, but I also believe that the 172 is the unspoken hero of aviation. Most people talk about big giant planes like airliners or cargo aircraft, but not many people outside of aviation see the recreational and training side. Not only is the Cessna 172 the most produced aircraft in the world, but it is also the most frequently trained on with student pilots. For many flight schools, the 172 is a top choice due to its simplicity that doesn't involve to much information for the pilot to handle, but it also doesn't have a lot of assistive technology meaning things like autopilot are not ...

Coaster Project/Quinn Walsh - Design Tech Project

Image
What is your project? My project  in design tech is about designing my own personal coasters on Adobe Illustrator  and then cutting them out on a laser cutter. The Second part of the project is designing a 3d coaster holder for the coasters to live in. Using Adobe Illustrator, I  created  my holder and printed it  out on the Carvey wood cutter. Then I had to sand both my coasters and the holder and stain them to protect the wood  against  liquids. What were the steps you took to complete your project? Research Coasters and Holders that I like. Design my Coasters and a holder on paper. Design my coaster on  Adobe Illustrator.  Cut out coasters on a laser cutter. Cut out Coaster Holder. Sand both the holder and coaster. Put finishing oil on the coaster and holder.  What do you like most about your project?  I liked cutting out the coaster and the coaster holder because it was an interesting experience, and it was fun ...

Walnut 1/8” wood coasters - Design Tech Project

Image
What is your project? My project is 4 1/8”*4”*4” walnut wood coasters with orange slice designs on them and an orange pun for each coaster. What were the steps you took to complete your project? 1. Design the coasters in illustrator 2. Pick the wood type 3. Cut the wood in the laser cutter 4. Finish the wood coasters and coaster with varnishing oil 5. Burnish the wood coasters and coaster holder What do you like most about your project? What i really liked most about my project is the fact that the orange slices all connect together to become a full orange. I put the slices on each coaster in the bottom right corner for this exact reason. What was most challenging about this project? The most challenging part about this project was having to recut the coasters on thinner wood. This is because on my first attempt, I put the wood thickness in as 1/8 inch instead of 1/4 inch, as I was doing 1/4 inch thick wood at first. I didn’t realize I put it in wrong until after it had been cut a...
