Flower Coasters Design Tech Project

Image
For my coaster holder project I decided to make my coasters a flower shape. I engraved the same lines into each coaster and painted those engravings different colors. I made six coasters. For the coaster holder I made it look like two leaves that the flowers sit in. The coasters are made out of cherry wood and the holder is made out of walnut. My favorite thing about this project is that I made one coaster for each of my family members that lives in houston. The most challenging part of this project was figuring out how I was going to make the holder look like leaves. If I redid this project and changed anything about it I would probably try to find a way to make the flower coasters a little more unique and I would make my coasters thinner. Now that I have finished my coasters I plan on giving them to my grandparents as a housewarming gift because they are moving to houston.

Meet Me at Midnights Coasters - Design Tech Project

My coaster project, which I based on four different Taylor Swift albums, was a unique and fun experience. Prior to my work in this course, my skills with 2D design, laser cutting, and engraving/cutting materials were basic. Throughout this project, I learned different skills and became more confident in my 2D design work.  For me, the most challenging part was designing the coasters. I wanted to make my coasters resemble the four album covers as best as possible, while still making sure they would translate well when engraved. However, with the help and feedback from my teacher, I successfully created four designs that were both replicas of the album cover and looked good when engraved.  My favorite part of the process was watching the laser cutter create my designs. It made me feel proud of the hard work and time I spent on the project.  One of the biggest takeaways from this experience was thoroughly brainstorming your design. Specifically, thinking how you would re-create the im

Turing over a "New Leaf" Coasters - Design Tech Project

Turning over a "New Leaf" Coasters and Holder.  For the coaster holder project in Design Tech, I decided to create 4 coasters related to my favorite game Animal Crossing New Leaf. Each of the coasters represents an icon from the game. The logo (the leaf), a money bag icon, a fossil, and the exclamation mark is a pitfall seed. I made my coaster out of 1/4-inch thick maple wood. I used adobe illustrator to design my coasters and coaster holder and then the laser cutter to cut and engrave them. The wooden dowel on my coaster holder was made out of the handle of a foam paintbrush. My favorite part of my project was watching my coasters finally get cut out and engraved after all of the work I put into designing them. Creating my coaster holder was the most challenging part of the whole process. Originally I had a different design for the coaster holder, it would've been a box with 3 sides leaving an opening for the odd shapes to hang out of the side, but this didn't end up

Spirited Away Coaster & Holder - Design Tech Project

Spirited Away Coaster & Holder Project!      For my first project in Design Technology, I was given the freedom to design and create intricate coasters using Adobe Illustrator and the laser cutter, as well as a unique coaster holder. I decided to create 5 coasters with different characters from Spirited Away, one of my favorite movies. I created these characters within illustrator, finding photos from the internet and changing or adding different elements in order to create the specific design I wanted, and fitted the characters on circles the size of the coasters that I had dimensioned. The most enjoyable part of the whole design process was creating my coaster holder, a rectangular box with finger joints, and a dragon from the movie wrapped around it. The biggest challenge while creating this box was finding a way to both laser cut finger joints and engrave the dragon without cutting off too much of the design. but with some trial and error, I was able to make it work.     I f I
