Design Tech Two Sided Racing Stripes Cutting Board

  • What is your project?

    • My project is a cutting board made out of walnut and cherry wood. It has two racing stripes down one side, and one stripe on the other side. 

  • How did you make it?

    • I made it by first drawing out a sketch of the cutting board that was half the scale of my actual cutting board. I then found two pieces of wood that would fit my cutting board, one big piece of walnut, and two smaller pieces of maple. I then used a ruler and pencil to measure out the dimensions of the wood. After figuring out the math and measurements, I rip cut the wood to be the exact width needed. After the rip cuts, we cross-cut the pieces of wood to make the length exact. Once we had all the pieces of wood, we glued together the wood to create our cutting board. After letting the glue dry, we used the planer to level out the cutting board and make it all even. After it was planed we used the router to round edges. We then finished it by sanding it and applying finishing oil. 

  • What do you like most about your project?

    • My favorite part of my project is the racing stripes down the side, I think it adds character and makes it look cool. 

  • What was challenging about this project?

    • The most challenging part of this project was the measurements of the wood, figuring out how much lee-way was needed for the saw, and how to make it all even. 

  • What would you change about the project if you did it again?

    • On the bottom of my cutting board, there is a small knot. If I was to redo it I would make sure the wood was perfect on every side. 

  • What is your plan for it now that it's done?

    • I plan to gift it to my family to use as a cutting board.

  My coaster project, which I based on four different Taylor Swift albums, was a unique and fun experience. Prior to my work in this course, my skills with 2D design, laser cutting, and engraving/cutting materials were basic. Throughout this project, I learned different skills and became more confident in my 2D design work.      For me, the most challenging part was designing the coasters. I wanted to make my coasters resemble the four album covers as best as possible, while still making sure they would translate well when being engraved. However, with the help and feedback from my teacher, I successfully created four designs that were both replicas of the album cover and looked good when engraved. My favorite part of the process was watching the laser cutter create my designs. Quidditch Set coasters - Max Barger

 Quidditch Set Coaster Project     For my coaster project, I wanted to do something that represented one of my top interests. I chose to design and create something Harry Potter related. Through this process, I changed the design and made lots of edits to ensure I could create my ideal design. I ended up going with my first idea and made three different coasters with designs based on Harry Potter's Quidditch set and the definitions on the back.       To make these awesome coasters, I had to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator as well as the proper procedures for the laser cutter and the CNC router. Prior to this, I had virtually no experience with these materials and tools, so it was a long process that was definitely worth learning. Zodiac Sign Coasters-Design Tech Project

What is your project? My project for Design Tech is zodiac-themed coasters! I made one for each member of my family, with their sun sign. How did you make it? I started my process by making a design from scratch on adobe illustrator. I added the zodiac name, symbol, and star alignment on each of the coasters, along with some stars in the back to match the galaxy theme. After my design was completed, I transferred it over to be cut in the Laser Cutter. I cut my design out on maple wood, then I made my holder design. I went for a fairly simple design, so it doesn't take the spotlight away from the coasters. After all of my parts were cut out, I sanded them all down in preparation for finishing oil. I did my first layer of finishing oil, then I burnished it (with steel wool), and kept doing this process for another 2 layers.
