The Surprise! -Design Tech Project

What is your project?

This is my cutting board. It is made out of Maple, Cherry, and Walnut wood. 

How did you make it?

I made this cutting board by first choosing the wood that I wanted to use. I proceeded to figure out how much wood I needed and make sure that I had the right measurements. I used a table saw to cut my wood into the right with and length. After my pieces were cut I glued them together and used clamps to make sure they were glued correctly. Once my wood pieces made a board I put them through a Plainer to make sure all of the pieces were the same thickness. I proceeded to rout the edges and sand my board. Once it was smooth, I added the finishing to bring out the color and make it more durable. 

What do you like most about your project?

My favorite part of making my project was cutting all the pieces of wood and using all the machines. 

What was challenging about this project?

A challenge that I had while making my board was making sure all of my measurements in the part that is not made of maple all added up to 2 inches. The different pieces needed to add up to 2 inches so that all the pieces would be the same.

What would you change about the project if you did it again?

If I would make this board again I would do a, better job with the gluing process so that I did to access glue. 

What is your plan for it now that it's done?

I plan to use it any time that I cook, to cut vegetables, fruit, and meats.

  My coaster project, which I based on four different Taylor Swift albums, was a unique and fun experience. Prior to my work in this course, my skills with 2D design, laser cutting, and engraving/cutting materials were basic. Throughout this project, I learned different skills and became more confident in my 2D design work.      For me, the most challenging part was designing the coasters. I wanted to make my coasters resemble the four album covers as best as possible, while still making sure they would translate well when being engraved. However, with the help and feedback from my teacher, I successfully created four designs that were both replicas of the album cover and looked good when engraved. Quidditch Set coasters - Max Barger

 Quidditch Set Coaster Project     For my coaster project, I wanted to do something that represented one of my top interests. I chose to design and create something Harry Potter related. Through this process, I changed the design and made lots of edits to ensure I could create my ideal design. I ended up going with my first idea and made three different coasters with designs based on Harry Potter's Quidditch set and the definitions on the back.       To make these awesome coasters, I had to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator as well as the proper procedures for the laser cutter and the CNC router. Prior to this, I had virtually no experience with these materials and tools, so it was a long process that was definitely worth learning. Zodiac Sign Coasters-Design Tech Project

What is your project? My project for Design Tech is zodiac-themed coasters! I made one for each member of my family, with their sun sign. How did you make it? I started my process by making a design from scratch on adobe illustrator. I added the zodiac name, symbol, and star alignment on each of the coasters, along with some stars in the back to match the galaxy theme. After my design was completed, I transferred it over to be cut in the Laser Cutter. I cut my design out on maple wood, then I made my holder design. I went for a fairly simple design, so it doesn't take the spotlight away from the coasters. After all of my parts were cut out, I sanded them all down in preparation for finishing oil. I did my first layer of finishing oil, then I burnished it (with steel wool), and kept doing this process for another 2 layers.
