Variety Wood Cutting Board- Design Tech Project

Variety Wood Cutting Board
Sofi Savarese

What is your project?

My project is a cutting board made of multiple slabs of different kinds of wood.

How did you make it?

I began the process by getting three different planks of wood, maple, cherry, and walnut. I then did a rip cut on the table slaw to the three strips of wood. I then cross-cut them to the length of my cutting board. Once I was finished with all of the cuts I glued all of the pieces of wood together with wood glue and used a clamp to hold them together. Once the glue had dried I took the claps off and cut over the top and bottom of the board. I passed the cutting board through a thickness planer. This cuts down the thickness of the wood and assures that the cutting board is even. After I was finished with this, I rounded all of the sides and edges with a router. this makes the final product look put together. I then sanded down all of the sides and put finishing oil on the wood to create the final product.

What do you like most about your project?

I really like the pattern of my board. The simplistic design makes the cutting board appealing to the eye, and not overwhelming and chaotic.

What was challenging about this project?

One of the most challenging parts of this project for me was rounding the sides with the planer. This was difficult for me because it was hard for me to position and hold the cutting board against the round-over bit. One of the reasons was because I wasn't tall enough to comfortably hold the board and because of this, it was hard for me to guide the wood onto the bit.
What would you change about the project if you did it again?

If I had more time to work on my project I would try and add a design on the border of the cutting board with the laser cutter. Since I didn't add the laser design, I would go back and make a more challenging pattern.

What is your plan for it now that it's done?

I will be giving my cutting board to my grandfather as a fathers day gift!
