[Cat in a Shark Costume Coaster and Coaster Holder] - Design Tech Project

Image
My project is made of mahogany wood (there was no cherry wood left, and mahogany is similar), with a cat in a shark costume design based on M ofusand's art, and a triangular coaster holder.       First, we were supposed to find designs we wanted to base our coasters on, and I chose the cat in a shark costume because I had scissors with that design, which gave me the idea. Then I looked for coaster holder designs, and I picked a triangular design with dowels, because circular ones were said to be more difficult.       Then we had to fill out the Project Proposal Form: the project name, the project type, the equipment needed, materials needed (1/8 or 1/4 Acrylic (clear or color) or 1/8, 1/4, 3/4 Walnut, Cherry, or Maple woods), the project description, and we had to add a drawing of our design with accurate measurements, along with out inspiration pictures, and finally we had to turn it in to Mr. Grisbee to get it approved....

Homemade Fish Coasters and Holder Design Model 1945 Soft Maple Design Number 3529372 - Design Tech Project

Image
What is your project?  For a project I was assigned in Design Tech, I decided to make my own Homemade text coasters with a silver fish-shaped holder. The coasters contain many various details, such as small fish, seaweed, and a sturgeon (which can be seen at the bottom of the FSSH coaster). The coaster holder itself has an eye and also has a hole in the center, and you can take out the coasters from the bottom side.  What were the steps you took to complete your project? Many steps are taken to make the coasters, such as buying the wood and crafting our model in an app called Adobe Illustrator. Once finished with both of those steps, I was able to laser cut out my coasters and sand off the burnt parts, ultimately finishing my coasters. For my coaster holder, it was almost the same process, but unlike the coasters, I used a wood cutting device called the CNC router. With this machine, I was able to get the pocket in the middle with perfect depth. What do you like most ab...

Geometric Coasters and Holder - Design Teck

Image
What is your project? My coaster consists of a double-layered piece of wood. The bottom layer is a simple circle painted in a solid color. The top layer is a geometric /Mayan design, made to remove enough from the wood to enable the user to see the color below. As for the coaster holder, it consists of a semicircle that cradles the coasters, attached to a backing of the same wood. This, in turn, is attached to a double-layered pedestal in a stair-like structure. What were the steps you took to complete your project? Firstly, for my coasters, I needed to draft how they would be made on paper. Next, I transitioned the idea to Adobe Illustrator, making sure it fit the requirements for our laser cutter. Next, after obtaining my wood and lining it with scotch tape to prevent burning, I used the laser cutter to cut the top layer for the coasters; however, I first painted the bottom layer before cutting. After gluing the ...

Game Character Drawing - Design Tech Project

Image
What is your project?     My coasters consist of four identical walnut coasters that are about 3 inches in width and length. The design consists of a drawing I made of a character from the game ULTRAKILL, with elements pertaining to the game on the top, left, and top left areas. What were the steps you took to complete your project?      We first started out by designing our coasters and coaster holders on Adobe Illustrator before exporting our coasters to the laser cutter, where they would be accurately cut out from a board of wood that we had decided on the measurements and type of wood. After this, most of us would work on varnishing our coasters as we waited for the CNC Router to cut out our coaster holders. After this, we sand and varnish our coaster holder, before burnishing both, and then apply a second layer of varnish, finishing off our coasters and coaster holders What do you like most about your project? Explain.     I like the drawin...

Flower Cross Coaster Set - Design Tech Project

Image
For the coaster project, I designed coasters that have crosses with flower patterns and borders with bible verses, and a coaster holder that holds them at an angle. I started by sketching out my ideas and putting together some cohesive designs. I wanted my design to be pretty, but also something that was actually important to me and that I would want to have in my room. I then began drawing out each cross and flower pattern on Illustrator. Once my designs were done, I cut out and engraved my coasters on the laser cutter on 1/4 inch wood. Then, I designed my coaster holder in Illustrator and used Easel to cut them out on the CNC router in two batches to get my 8 corner pieces on 3/4 inch cherry wood, and my square base on 1/4 inch wood. Once my pieces were cut out, I glued them together and left my holder clamped to dry. Once it was dry, I sanded down each surface with a 150-grit sandpaper, then 220-grit sandpaper, and then did the same with my coasters. Once everything was smooth, I va...

atom + element coasters reflection - Design Tech Project

Image
What is your project?      My project was making coasters and a coaster holder themed like the table elements and an atom. The holder is a piece of wood shaped and carved into an atom with a hexagonal cutout. My coasters are designed like different elements on the periodic table, but with "elements" of things that reflect me. Ex. (KD) Kat Diane, the atomic number is 2, and the group is 6 because I was born June 2nd.  What were the steps you took to complete your project?      I decided on walnut as the wood for my holder and acrylic as the material for my coasters. After I spent time designing the engravings and shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I used the CNC router to cut out and carve my atom, and then the laser cutter for the acrylic elements. Once the holder was finished at the CNC router, I sanded it and used a tool to chip off the uneven parts. To further smooth it over, I sanded with 220 sandpaper, then coated it with varnishing oil before re...

Piece by Piece - Design Tech Coasters

Image
For this project, I had to make a Coaster and a Coaster Holder for this course. I had many ideas for what kind of coasters and coaster holders I wanted to make, but then I decided to stick with making connecting puzzle pieces with a coaster holder that held all the pieces together. This Project had multiple steps. The first step was to draw the coaster design on a piece of paper, and we also had to fill out a sheet listing all the wood options we wanted to use for our coasters. Later on, we started cutting out our design on a piece of wood with the wood cutter. After we had cut out our coasters and coaster holders, it was time to rub varnish oil onto them to smooth the wood. This had to be done twice. After all of these steps, our coasters were completed. I have enjoyed making the coasters alot. I enjoyed designing in Adobe Illustrator because on this platform, I could sketch out different ideas and shapes for the puzzle pieces I could make, even though it took a while. Another favori...

Guitar coaters and holder- Design Tech Project

Image
I made some guitar coasters with a guitar rack-shaped coaster holder. When I first started, I decided I wanted to have them be slightly different designs and sizes so it felt more realistic. I made them in Adobe Illustrator, which was probably the most time-consuming part of the project. I had to create all of the outlines and line breaks around the neck and strings of the guitar. I had to mess around a lot with the sizing and line weight so they could actually fit a cup on top, which required a bit of trial and error. Once they were done, I laser cut them and engraved the designs.  After the guitars were finished, I started on the coaster holder. I went through a couple of prototypes, one was...

Whimsical Coasters and Coaster Holder - Design Tech

Image
The "Whimsical Coasters and Coaster Holder" is a set of four floral coasters and a modern wooden-dowel style coaster holder. The first step in completing this project was to design both the coasters and the coaster holder in Adobe Illustrator.       Before I could begin designing them, I had to learn to use the software. Because Adobe Illustrator is the software that connects to the laser cutter (the machine that engraves and cuts out the coasters), I needed to learn the ins and outs of the software before designing and printing my project.  The second step was sketching out the project and making a materials list, so I had a finalized plan as to what I was going to make.  After that, I designed the coasters on Illustrator, using specific stroke weights for different purposes. For example, black on Illustrator correlates to "engrave" on the laser cutter, and red correlates to "cut". Once I got a lesson on how to send files to the ...
