Quetzalcoatl Coasters and Coaster Holder

My project consists of three coasters and one coaster holder and is themed around the Nahua god Quetzalcoatl. All four designs are various images imported and put together by me. Using a CNC router (A machine specializing in cutting on specific pieces of wood or plastic), and a laser cutter meant for making the actual designs on the coasters and cutting out less precise pieces such as the boundaries of the coasters and coaster holder. 

My favorite part of the project was seeing how my work was finally materializing in front of me while it was being engraved with the laser cutter. I also enjoyed researching and planning my project in Adobe Illustrator. 

During my journey of making these, I encountered a few challenges, the main one was understanding how the laser cutter works and how to use it. While not complicated, the laser cutter requires lots of steps which confused me at first, I did not import it correctly from Adobe Illustrator to Google Drive and ended up with the laser cutter not cutting out the pieces of wood after engraving them, making me start over again. I also had to learn how to use the CNC router, which I did not mess up in but was still a challenge to learn. 

If I would change one thing it would be to make my coaster designs more sleek, perhaps less symbols with a more protruding, singular design, such as the one with my coaster holder. 

Now that I have finished my project, I will take it home and use it for personal use and for my family to use it. I hope it will last and be good at holding drinks on top of it.

  My coaster project, which I based on four different Taylor Swift albums, was a unique and fun experience. Prior to my work in this course, my skills with 2D design, laser cutting, and engraving/cutting materials were basic. Throughout this project, I learned different skills and became more confident in my 2D design work.      For me, the most challenging part was designing the coasters. Quidditch Set coasters - Max Barger

 Quidditch Set Coaster Project     For my coaster project, I wanted to do something that represented one of my top interests. I chose to design and create something Harry Potter related. Through this process, I changed the design and made lots of edits to ensure I could create my ideal design. I ended up going with my first idea and made three different coasters with designs based on Harry Potter's Quidditch set and the definitions on the back.       To make these awesome coasters, I had to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator as well as the proper procedures for the laser cutter and the CNC router. Prior to this, I had virtually no experience with these materials and tools, so it was a long process that was definitely worth learning. Game of Thrones Coasters

I made 4 Game of thrones coasters, in about 10 class sessions, starting with adobe illustrator, I found images that I wanted to put on my coasters and I inputted them into illustrator and cut them. I personally didn't encounter any problems with my cut, but a lot of my classmates did. I was the first person to cut, because I didn't have that many, and also because adobe illustrator was super intuitive and easy to use (in my experience).  While making the coasters I encountered a couple problems, most of them in the planning stage, things like finding images were pretty difficult, but when I found an image it was pretty much smooth sailing (I triple-checked everything while using the machines, which might be part of my success).
