Optical Illusion Wood Cutting Board - Design Tech Project

In Design Tech, we've been making our own wooden cutting boards. We designed these cutting boards in duos and cut them in half at the end so each person had their own. For my cutting board, I attempted an optical illusion pattern where the two different colors of wood phase into each other.

To make these, my partner and I first sketched our design on a piece of paper with measurements. Then, we used the table saw to cut out our strips of wood. After we cut out the wood, we glued them together and used clamps to hold them in place for a few days. Once the glue was dry, we used the planer to plane the cutting board so it would be flat. We also cut off the edges so they line up. After that, we used the table saw to cut the board in half, so I finally had my own. Then, I used the router to round the edges of the board. I sanded the board and added finishing oil before burnishing the board with steel wool and adding more finishing oil.

What I like most about my cutting board is how much the two colors of wood contrast. It creates a pattern that is very satisfying to look at.

The most challenging part of this project for me was using the table saw. It's easy to make mistakes that you don't notice until its too late. We ended up with some messed up strips of wood.

If I were to do this project again, I'd try to do better when using the table saw. We ended up using some of the messed up strips of wood to put together the cutting board, so there are strange marks and holes in between where the strips are glued together.

Now that it's finished, I'm going to take it home and hide it from my parents so I can surprise them with it on Christmas!
