Pirates of the Carribean Coaster Project- Jonah Lawrence
Pirates of the Caribbean Coaster Set
By Jonah Lawrence
My first Tinkeria project was/is a set of coasters engraved with different pirate skulls, and ships from Pirates of the Caribbean. I also made a black coaster holder engraved with the Dead Man’s Key, and Blackbeard’s sword.
I had some issues getting Illustrator (our design software) to work on my laptop. In the end, I got a loaner computer that could work with the software. I knew what I wanted to do with my coasters. I traced blank pirate skulls from google and added bandanas and swords into sized circles (I made the bandanas, but the swords were image traced). After the coasters, I designed the holder to hold 2 stacks of 2 coasters each. My teacher gave me this suggestion after realizing that my wood was too small for one circular stack.
The production phase was my favorite, I hooked up to the laser cutter, and left class with my first set in progress. However, when I returned, the laser bed height was incorrect, and the engravings were too shallow. Thankfully, there was extra wood, and I cut it out again with success. I had to sand some blemishes off the bottoms of the coasters, but then it was on to the next step. I used the CNC router to cut down into my piece of wood to create my coaster holder. I also painted it black at my teacher’s suggestion before cutting the symbols into it.
I enjoyed the cutting process more than the designing phase because I like hands-on learning and using the Laser Cutter and CNC Router was an enjoyable experience (not including the tech issues). I also enjoyed using Illustrator to design, it is a useful software, and I hope to use it at home. If I had to do over my whole project, I would use a Star Wars theme and try using acrylic as my coaster material instead.
