Coastal Coasters

My project was creating four coasters that were inspired by the beach, the plan I took to make my coasters was first to go to Illustrator and make my design for my coasters as well as my holder.    I designed four coasters on the laser cutter which include an Anker, a shell, and a hibiscus flower, as well as a two beach chair with an umbrella.   I then went on to make my coaster holder I first designed it on Illustrator, and then I went on to make it on the CNC Router.   The materials I used to make my coaster holder and my coasters were cherry wood, a Laser Cutter, a CNC Router, Sandpaper, and a wood polisher.    Some challenges I faced were getting the correct measurements in Illustrator and making sure everything was aligned right so that when it was cutting out on the laser cutter and CNC router everything went smoothly.    What I would change about my coasters would be to make them the size bigger, My plan for now that I have finished making my coasters is for people to enjoy using my coasters for their beverage at my house.    The thing I like most about my coasters is definitely the design I chose to make, I chose to do something related to the beach because I love the beach and I wanted to incorporate that into my coaster design project.

  My coaster project, which I based on four different Taylor Swift albums, was a unique and fun experience. Prior to my work in this course, my skills with 2D design, laser cutting, and engraving/cutting materials were basic. Throughout this project, I learned different skills and became more confident in my 2D design work.      For me, the most challenging part was designing the coasters. I wanted to make my coasters resemble the four album covers as best as possible, while still making sure they would translate well when being engraved. However, with the help and feedback from my teacher, I successfully created four designs that were both replicas of the album cover and looked good when engraved. Quidditch Set coasters - Max Barger

 Quidditch Set Coaster Project     For my coaster project, I wanted to do something that represented one of my top interests. I chose to design and create something Harry Potter related. Through this process, I changed the design and made lots of edits to ensure I could create my ideal design. I ended up going with my first idea and made three different coasters with designs based on Harry Potter's Quidditch set and the definitions on the back.       To make these awesome coasters, I had to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator as well as the proper procedures for the laser cutter and the CNC router. Prior to this, I had virtually no experience with these materials and tools, so it was a long process that was definitely worth learning. Zodiac Sign Coasters-Design Tech Project

What is your project? My project for Design Tech is zodiac-themed coasters! I made one for each member of my family, with their sun sign. How did you make it? I started my process by making a design from scratch on adobe illustrator. I added the zodiac name, symbol, and star alignment on each of the coasters, along with some stars in the back to match the galaxy theme. After my design was completed, I transferred it over to be cut in the Laser Cutter. I cut my design out on maple wood, then I made my holder design. I went for a fairly simple design, so it doesn't take the spotlight away from the coasters. After all of my parts were cut out, I sanded them all down in preparation for finishing oil. I did my first layer of finishing oil, then I burnished it (with steel wool), and kept doing this process for another 2 layers.
