Aquatic life coasters - Design Tech Project

  • What is your project?
My project consisted of three maple wood coasters that were 1/4 inch each and a maple wood coaster holder. The three coasters I made each had a different design. The coaster holder I designed used two 3/4 inch thick pieces of wood, with one of those pieces of wood being engraved and cut, and the other being a shape like the letter "c" that was glued atop the other piece.
  • What were the steps you took to complete your project?
  • The first step I took when creating my project was finding inspirational photos on Pinterest. From there, I started creating the sketch for my coaster with regard to the dimensions and the thickness that I wanted my coasters to be, which was 2.5 by 2.5 inches and a 1/4 of an inch thick. After determining the dimtions I wanted my coaster to be I began to create the design for my coaster holder in which I initialy decided to have one 1/4 inch thick peice with 3.1 by 3.1 inch dimetions and I wanted to glue a 1/2 inch pice of wood that was cut to look like a "c" atop the 1/4 inch peice of wood and on top of that "c" shaped pecie of wood I wanted glue another 3.1 by 3.1 1/4 inch pecie of wood on that and from there I wanted to duplicate that c shaped peice of wood with a 3.1 by 3.1 inch wood idead again glue it on top of that essencially. After I proposed my idea for my coaster hold Mr.Grisbee he told me with my current idea would require a lot of glueing and sanding which would make it ugly so he told me I could excute a simalar idea that would be easier by insead using one 3/4 inch thick peice of wood with 3.1 by 3.1 inch dimentions and it had a 2.6 by 2.6 inch demintion and 1/4 thick pocket cut into it and glued on top of that was "c" shaped peice of wood that shared the same thickness as the other peice of wood. From my coaster I designed them in Adobe Illustrator, and then I had then engraved and cut them useing the laser cutter. After having my coasters cut, I sanded then I added wood varnish, and after that, I used steel wool on them. For my coaster holder, I cut them using the CNC router after designing them initially in Adobe Illustrator, then I imported the downloaded SVG file to Easel. After getting my holders, I used a chisel and hammer to remove the two pieces, and from there I glued the two pieces together and sanded them, and then I added wood varnish to them.
  • What do you like most about your project? Explain.
  • I really liked it when I cut out the coaster on the laser cutter because it felt nice to see the physical culmination of my work.
  • What was challenging about this project? Explain.
  • The most challenging part was gluing the two parts of my coaster holder together because the glue dries quickly, and my hands were shaky since I was nervous, so my holder's top half was misaligned.
  • What would you change about the project if you did it again? Why?
  • I would have calmed myself down before gluing my two parts together so that it would have been even.
  • What is your plan for it now that it's done?
  • I plan on putting it on my desk and using it for drinking water when I'm studying.
