Toaster Coasters - Design Tech Project

  • What is your project?
For my project I made 4 coasters in the shape of slices of bread, along with a toaster-shaped coaster holder with notches and buttons. I made it all out of cherry wood, ranging from 1/8 inch - 3/4 inch thickness.
  • What were the steps you took to complete your project?
The first thing I did was write my project proposal to Mr. Grisbee. This includes which type of wood I will use, how much of it, the thickness of the wood, and rough sketches of my coasters anf the coaster holders. Once that was a approved I began designing the coasters in Adobe Illustrator. Though it was a very simple design, it was difficult to get the shape just right. After I was happy with the shapes of my coasters I started working on designing my coaster holder. The holder consists of 3 peices, 2 side peices that are 1/4 inch and 1 middle peice that is 3/4 inches. After completing the all of the designs, I used the laser cutter to cut my coasters out. Then I used a scaled-down shape of my coasters to cut out a thin cork sheet on the back of them. Then coated them in finishing oil and burnished them with steel wool to finalize my coasters. After this, I logged in to Easel, imported my coaster holder designs and began the cutting process on the CNC router for the bigger middle layer of the coaster holder, and it came out great. Then I started cutting the two outer layers and knobs. When they were almost finished I realised the sizing was off by just a bit so I had to re do those. Once all of my peices were succesfully cut out, I glued them all together and sanded it down so it would be smooth. Then I did the same finishing process as the coasters, finishing oil and burnishing. Done!
  • What do you like most about your project? Explain.
I like the knobs on the side of the toaster, because I think without them it would look stale and not resemble a toaster as much.
  • What was challenging about this project? Explain.
The most challenging part of my project was operating the laser cutter and CNC router software. It is all very complicated and I was constantly need help.
  • What would you change about the project if you did it again? Why?
I would try to be more acurate with my glueing, I wasnt super accurate this time so I had to sand it down a lot.
  • What is your plan for it now that it's done?
I am most likely going to keep them at home, but I will ask my parents if they think it would be a good gift for anyone, so I might give it away.
