Zodiac Sign Coasters-Design Tech Project

  • What is your project?
    • My project for Design Tech is zodiac-themed coasters! I made one for each member of my family, with their sun sign.
  • How did you make it?
    • I started my process by making a design from scratch on adobe illustrator. I added the zodiac name, symbol, and star alignment on each of the coasters, along with some stars in the back to match the galaxy theme. After my design was completed, I transferred it over to be cut in the Laser Cutter. I cut my design out on maple wood, then I made my holder design. I went for a fairly simple design, so it doesn't take the spotlight away from the coasters. After all of my parts were cut out, I sanded them all down in preparation for finishing oil. I did my first layer of finishing oil, then I burnished it (with steel wool), and kept doing this process for another 2 layers. This project took many hours of hard work, but I am very pleased with the results. 
  • What do you like most about your project?
    • I like how my project is completely unique to my family. This is definitely something my family will put to good use, and because of the high-quality materials I used, it can be used for many years without damage. 
  • What was challenging about this project?
    • My design was very intricate, and I had to hand-draw the constellation which was very hard. I'd say I faced many challenges during this process, but my teacher, Mr. Grisbee, was always nearby and very helpful.
  • What would you change about the project if you did it again?
    • If I were to do my project again, I would switch the wood out for something lighter. I feel like the dark wood drowns out my design, and I really wanted that to pop. 
  • What is your plan for it now that it's done?
    • These will be going straight to my living room to be used by my whole family!

 💫💖My Amazing Cutting Board💖💫 By: Olivia 💕💝😍👅 Our project for Design Tech was to make a cutting board. I made it with three different   types of wood, cherry, walnut, and maple. We sketched our ideas and figured out the dimensions for the cutting board. Once we knew how much wood we needed, we cut it out and glued it. My partner and I (Angelica) finished gluing the wood strips together and then cut it in half so we could each have a half. Once that step was finished, we flattened the board and sanded it. Then we used two coats of finishing oil. After that, we burnished twice. I also did the extra step of engraving my mom's monogram on the cutting board. My favorite thing was engraving the letters on the board and seeing it all come together. The hardest thing was getting over the fear of cutting the wood because the blades were very scary and fast. I might do more engraving because it was really fun. I am going to give it to my mom for Christmas.

Asymmetrical serving board

  What is your project? my project is a small serving board How did you make it? We cut many pieces of cherry and walnut ignorer to create our design What do you like most about your project? I like the non standard design of my board. Most people chose to create or use symmetrical cutting boards. I also like that I created a large chamfer on the Bottom edge to create a floating look. What was challenging about this project? it was challenging to decide what points to use so the grain would align nicely. What would you change about the project if you did it again? I would cut the chamfer to be on the other side. it looks fine but I think it could be better. What is your plan for it now that it's done? it will live in the kitchen and be used from time to time with guests.

Cherry Wood Cutting Board - Design Tech Project

What is your project? I created a cherry wood cutting board. It is a total of 2 planks of wood, both cut in half and lined up, so it is now 4 separate pieces.  How did you make it? I cut 2 planks of cherry wood in half, planed and leveled, routed the corners off, and finished with a linseed oil and beeswax mix.  What do you like most about your project? I like that I was able to create something that is going to be useful to me in my house. My family does a lot of cooking, and it certainly will not hurt to have another cutting board! What was challenging about this project? To be honest, it wasn't. the toughest part for me was that I wanted to do more, but as our previous project ran longer than expected, I was not able to add in those touches. What would you change about the project if you did it again? I just wish that we could have had those originally planned classes. That was the only facet of this project that I had any real issue with.  What is your plan for it now...
