V's Burgers - Design Tech Project

         My goal for the project I decided to work on for design tech was to make a set of coasters that each represented a different ingredient in your average burger. When alone, they can serve as coasters for your drink but when stacked come together to form a delicious-looking burger! I made it using a program called Illustrator, which enabled me to create the shapes and designs of my coasters. Once my designs were made, I chose the color of acrylic that I wanted to use for my coasters, and once I had everything downloaded, inserted my designs into the program which would then allow the laser cutter to both engrave and cut out my designs. 

    The thing I enjoyed most about my project was getting to see my designs becoming real life. Not only is it an interesting process to look at, but it was awesome getting to see the things that I had created on my own come to life and being able to hold them after. The most challenging part of this project was either creating the designs on Illustrator or coming up with the design for it. The designs I chose to do were relatively simple so they weren't as complicated to create, but Illustrator is a program that takes time to learn, and although I had been using it for the entire semester already, I still made mistakes and ended up requiring guidance. Meanwhile, coming up with the design was difficult because of the wide array of options I could have chosen from. I was trying to find something that was both silly and creative, and having thought back to some designs I had seen before involving coasters, came up with the idea of a burger and its box. 


    If there's one thing I would have changed about the project if I could redo it, it would be to choose a different color of acrylic for my two burger buns. Unfortunately, the only color accessible that looked relatively similar to an actual burger bun was transparent and in my opinion, it ruined the look of the burger a bit as it's the only part of it which is see-through. My plan with my project now is to share it with my family members and hopefully put it to good use and show it off when guests are over for dinner!

  My coaster project, which I based on four different Taylor Swift albums, was a unique and fun experience. Prior to my work in this course, my skills with 2D design, laser cutting, and engraving/cutting materials were basic. Throughout this project, I learned different skills and became more confident in my 2D design work.      For me, the most challenging part was designing the coasters. I wanted to make my coasters resemble the four album covers as best as possible, while still making sure they would translate well when being engraved. Quidditch Set coasters - Max Barger

 Quidditch Set Coaster Project     For my coaster project, I wanted to do something that represented one of my top interests. I chose to design and create something Harry Potter related. Through this process, I changed the design and made lots of edits to ensure I could create my ideal design. I ended up going with my first idea and made three different coasters with designs based on Harry Potter's Quidditch set and the definitions on the back.       To make these awesome coasters, I had to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator as well as the proper procedures for the laser cutter and the CNC router. Prior to this, I had virtually no experience with these materials and tools, so it was a long process that was definitely worth learning. Zodiac Sign Coasters-Design Tech Project

What is your project? My project for Design Tech is zodiac-themed coasters! I made one for each member of my family, with their sun sign. How did you make it? I started my process by making a design from scratch on adobe illustrator. I added the zodiac name, symbol, and star alignment on each of the coasters, along with some stars in the back to match the galaxy theme. After my design was completed, I transferred it over to be cut in the Laser Cutter. I cut my design out on maple wood, then I made my holder design. I went for a fairly simple design, so it doesn't take the spotlight away from the coasters. After all of my parts were cut out, I sanded them all down in preparation for finishing oil. I did my first layer of finishing oil, then I burnished it (with steel wool), and kept doing this process for another 2 layers.
