atom + element coasters reflection - Design Tech Project
- What is your project?
My project was making coasters and a coaster holder themed like the table elements and an atom. The holder is a piece of wood shaped and carved into an atom with a hexagonal cutout. My coasters are designed like different elements on the periodic table, but with "elements" of things that reflect me. Ex. (KD) Kat Diane, the atomic number is 2, and the group is 6 because I was born June 2nd.
- What were the steps you took to complete your project?
I decided on walnut as the wood for my holder and acrylic as the material for my coasters. After I spent time designing the engravings and shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I used the CNC router to cut out and carve my atom, and then the laser cutter for the acrylic elements. Once the holder was finished at the CNC router, I sanded it and used a tool to chip off the uneven parts. To further smooth it over, I sanded with 220 sandpaper, then coated it with varnishing oil before repeating the process.
- What do you like most about your project? Explain.
My favorite part of the finished product is the contrast between the colorful acrylic and wood, because I feel like it has a nice contrast and looks unique.
- What was challenging about this project? Explain.
A more challenging part of the process was working with the machines, because there are a lot of specific things you need to adjust or check before using them, so they work.
- What would you change about the project if you did it again? Why?
If I could redo this project, I would make more coasters so I could have more different colors.
- What is your plan for it now that it's done?
I am going to brag to all my friends and then take it home for my iced coffee.
