[Cat in a Shark Costume Coaster and Coaster Holder] - Design Tech Project
My project is made of mahogany wood (there was no cherry wood left, and mahogany is similar), with a cat in a shark costume design based on Mofusand's art, and a triangular coaster holder.
First, we were supposed to find designs we wanted to base our coasters on, and I chose the cat in a shark costume because I had scissors with that design, which gave me the idea. Then I looked for coaster holder designs, and I picked a triangular design with dowels, because circular ones were said to be more difficult.
Then we had to fill out the Project Proposal Form: the project name, the project type, the equipment needed, materials needed (1/8 or 1/4 Acrylic (clear or color) or 1/8, 1/4, 3/4 Walnut, Cherry, or Maple woods), the project description, and we had to add a drawing of our design with accurate measurements, along with out inspiration pictures, and finally we had to turn it in to Mr. Grisbee to get it approved.
Then we were supposed to make our coasters and design in Adobe Illustrator, using precise measurements and using black for parts we wanted engraved and pure red for parts I wanted cut out, and we also made our coaster holder and then uploaded it to Easel. During this time, Mr. Grisbee gave us the materials we requested from the Project Proposal Form.
Once we were finished, we saved the file, added our Google Drive, and made sure to tape one side of the wooden board. After that, I went to the laser cutter, logging into my Google Drive account on the computer connected to the Laser Cutter and then following the steps of the Laser Cutter Checklist. Eva helped me ensure I was taking the right steps and assisted me with things I had forgotten about.
After that, I used the CNC Router, logging into my Easel account on the computer that was connected to the CNC Router. Mr. Grisbee helped me with cutting my wooden board, dowels, and making sure my design placement was correct, and preparing the CNC Router.
Once my coaster holder was finished, I took it out of the CNC Router and then used the chisel to separate my coaster holder design from the wood it was carved out of. Next, I used 150 and 230-grit sandpaper on the triangular design. After that, Mr. Grisbee showed me how to glue the dowels into my coaster holder, using the Instant Bond Adhesive in the holes of my triangular design and Stick Fast Activator on the dowels. Once the dowels were put in, the glue would instantly dry, and then wipe off the excess glue with a paper towel. Afterwards, I used the 150-grit sandpaper to remove the glue left on the coaster holder. Then I used the varnishing oil and burnishing (steel wood) on both my coasters and coaster holder.
What I like most about my project is the coaster design. I really love Mofusand's art, and I'm very enthusiastic to use designs inspired by it.
The most challenging part of this project was creating the design and making sure I was doing it correctly, fixing up my mistakes, and making sure to use precise measurements, ensuring my coasters come out correctly.
What I would probably change if I did it again is most likely the designs; I would change them into more anime-based designs that my mom enjoys.
My plan for now that it's done is to give it to my mom and dad, and hope that they'll like it and use it.
