Coaster Unconscious - Design Tech Project
What is your project?
My project is a coaster set based on the video game Collective Unconscious. The designs created for the coasters and the coaster holder all reference things and events that happen in Collective Unconscious.
What were the steps you took to complete your project?
To complete this project, I created original designs based on things from Collective Unconscious in Adobe Illustrator, and then used the laser cutter to print them onto the coasters. First, I decided what parts of the game I wanted to be in my designs. I knew I wanted to make one based on the first cover of the book you use to save progress in the game, one showing the game's main imagery, and one based on the game's protagonist. It took me a little while to figure out what I wanted to do for the fourth design, but I ended up with a design based on one of the "eidola" you can collect in the game. I sketched my initial designs for these, and then recreated them in Adobe Illustrator. Once I got the Illustrator versions finished, I printed them onto the coasters. The holder is based on the totem pole hat is in Minnatsuki's (the game's protagonist) room. I liked making my designs for my coasters, it was really fun to think about what was in the game which I could represent on each and how I would do so.
What do you like most about your project? Explain.
I like the designs I made for the coasters the most. I'm really hapy with how I thought through what elements from the game I wanted to include, and how I went about their inclusion. It was very interesting making the designs specifically for the circular space, and I enjoyed exploring that design template for the project
What was challenging about this project? Explain.
The most challenging thing for the project was making the coaster designs in Illustrator. There are a lot of organic shapes in the designs, and making those shapes was difficult for me to do in Illustrator.
What would you change about the project if you did it again? Why?
I would only change some small design details in the project if I did it again. I messed up on laster cutting the symbols for the holder, so I would make efforts to arrange those correctly, and I would also change the thickness of some of my lines on the coasters
What is your plan for it now that it's done?
Now that my project is done, I will take it home and have it for my own use. I have shown the project to the members of the Collective Unconscious discord server and gotten very positive feedback, including comments from some of the main developers for the game. I am also considering taking my designs, giving them some tiny updates, and then producing them as keychains and/or stickers to sell to other fans of Collective Unconscious.
