Flower Cross Coaster Set - Design Tech Project
For the coaster project, I designed coasters that have crosses with flower patterns and borders with bible verses, and a coaster holder that holds them at an angle. I started by sketching out my ideas and putting together some cohesive designs. I wanted my design to be pretty, but also something that was actually important to me and that I would want to have in my room. I then began drawing out each cross and flower pattern on Illustrator. Once my designs were done, I cut out and engraved my coasters on the laser cutter on 1/4 inch wood. Then, I designed my coaster holder in Illustrator and used Easel to cut them out on the CNC router in two batches to get my 8 corner pieces on 3/4 inch cherry wood, and my square base on 1/4 inch wood. Once my pieces were cut out, I glued them together and left my holder clamped to dry. Once it was dry, I sanded down each surface with a 150-grit sandpaper, then 220-grit sandpaper, and then did the same with my coasters. Once everything was smooth, I varnished everything, let them rest, then burnished them with steel wool and did another round of varnish.
My favorite part about this project was definitely designing them in Illustrator. It was really fun, and I loved seeing my designs come together. The most challenging part mentally was sanding. It took a very long time and was really tedious, but it was worth it. If I did this project again, I would try to be more precise and careful. There are a few spots on my coaster holder that are a little rough or where the finish isn't even, and the line weight on my engravings is a bit thin. I'm really happy with how they turned out, and now that I'm finished, I'm excited to have some nice coasters in my room.
