Geometric Coasters and Holder - Design Teck
My coaster consists of a double-layered piece of wood. The bottom layer is a simple circle painted in a solid color. The top layer is a geometric /Mayan design, made to remove enough from the wood to enable the user to see the color below. As for the coaster holder, it consists of a semicircle that cradles the coasters, attached to a backing of the same wood. This, in turn, is attached to a double-layered pedestal in a stair-like structure.
What were the steps you took to complete your project?
Firstly, for my coasters, I needed to draft how they would be made on paper. Next, I transitioned the idea to Adobe Illustrator, making sure it fit the requirements for our laser cutter. Next, after obtaining my wood and lining it with scotch tape to prevent burning, I used the laser cutter to cut the top layer for the coasters; however, I first painted the bottom layer before cutting. After gluing the pieces together, I began on my coaster. Following a similar process, I began designing the pieces, this time with thicker wood. Next, I imported it into a software called Easel, which, in turn, I exported to our CNC routers, an extremely precise drill bit that can handle larger wood than the laser cutter. After finishing, I needed to use the sawstop, a large rotating saw, to cut off part of my coaster holder to allow it to attach cleanly to its pedestal. Lastly, I sanded the pieces of both the coaster and holder, and varnished it, before wood glueing it.
What do you like most about your project? Explain.
I enjoyed the amount of creative freedom associated with this project, and the practical knowledge we gained from making them.
What was challenging about this project? Explain.
The most challenging part of this project was my top layer for the coasters, as I had to do it by hand, and it was repeatedly too fragile, which required an irritating amount of redesigns
What would you change about the project if you did it again? Why?
I disagree with the notion that the project needs and redos
What is your plan for it now that it's done?
I plan to give it to my mother as a late Mother's Day gift
